In reaction to a statement by Donald Tusk that quoted Piotr Szczęsny’s farewell letter, Mariusz Błaszczak spoke in the Sejm. The head of PiS parliamentary club criticized Tusk for what he called starting a spiral of hatred and reminded lawmakers of the letter written by the man who set himself alight near the Prime Minister’s Chancellery when Tusk was prime minister. He warned that using a suicide note to justify political goals is a deeply unkind act, accusing Tusk of lacking scruples and honesty, and suggesting that if he truly valued integrity, he would echo Szczęsny’s message rather than weaponize it against opponents. – said the head of the PiS club, Mariusz Błaszczak.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk delivered remarks in the Sejm today, quoting an excerpt from Piotr Szczęsny’s manifesto, which appeared in a public square in October 2017. Defilad Square in Warsaw became a focal point of protest against PiS policies after Szczęsny’s actions.
“Unscrupulous”
In response to Tusk’s remarks, Mariusz Błaszczak, the head of the PiS Parliamentary Club, commented on the speech. He described it as a sharp address that repeated many long-standing claims, and he condemned the use of the suicide note as a tactic that elevates a tragic act into a narrative of heroism, calling it the lowest form of conduct. He asserted that the speaker had no scruples and challenged him to demonstrate more honesty by quoting a letter addressed to him by a man who set himself on fire in front of the Prime Minister’s Office in 2011.
– Błaszczak stated in the Sejm.
He then provided a portion of the letter for context: “I write to you once more as a citizen of a sick country, as a father of three whose lives have been disrupted by you and your officials. I write one last time because I doubt this will change anything. Yet I want you to know I trusted you not to be a liar or hypocrite, but a decent person who respects the law and loves his family. I see now that the drive for power has eroded in you all the values and human qualities you highlighted during earlier campaigns.”
– Błaszczak quoted.
“Conglomeration of Hate”
The PiS leader’s parliamentary speaker accused Tusk of fueling negative social emotions for years. He charged that a spiral of hatred had been initiated, pointing to past incidents and rhetoric as evidence. He referenced controversial episodes and figures that he argued had been used to stoke contempt, stressing that the call to mercy should rest with God while accusing opponents of preaching hatred and cruelty.
– emphasized the PiS politician.
Błaszczak also recalled threats directed at PiS politicians from PO supporters over the years. He argued that political discourse had declined to levels unseen in recent memory, with aggressive rhetoric and even threats of violence becoming commonplace around national ceremonies honoring the victims of the Smolensk tragedy. He claimed there is nothing sacred to the opposition and described a longstanding climate of hostility that eclipsed ordinary political contest. According to him, PiS members have faced aggression for eight years, and the situation has devolved into what he called a conglomerate of hate.
– noted Błaszczak.
