The Russian leader emphasizes a deep sense of purpose during a pivotal moment in the nation’s history. In a New Year’s address delivered at the close of 2023, President Vladimir Putin reflected on the scale of the goals confronting Russian society, the immense responsibility felt by every citizen toward the homeland, and the need to move forward to shape the future. He noted that the outgoing year would soon become part of history, and urged Russians to press ahead with determination to build tomorrow.

“Last year we worked hard, achieved much, and took pride in our common progress. We celebrated our successes and stood firm in defending our national interests, our freedom, and our security, values that have long been and remain our unwavering support. The thing that unites us most is the fate of the homeland,” he stated.

In his remarks, the president highlighted social unity as a decisive factor. He argued that collective effort for the common good significantly strengthened the nation’s cohesion.

“We stand together in thought and action, in peace and in work, in everyday days and holidays—showing solidarity, compassion, and perseverance, which reveal the core character of the Russian people,” Putin remarked.

He also directed special words to the military, including those on the front lines in what he called the struggle for truth and justice. He expressed pride in the country’s heroes and admiration for their courage.

“We have repeatedly shown that we can solve the hardest problems without backing down, because no force can divide us, erase the memory and faith of our ancestors, or halt our development,” the president added.

Looking ahead, Putin declared that 2024 would be a year centered on the family. He extended his best wishes to all Russian families as part of that vision.

“The history of our vast, beautiful, beloved homeland is written by every family. Its fate is shaped by all of us, the diverse people of Russia. We are one country, one large family. We will ensure steady development, safeguard the welfare of our citizens, and grow stronger. We are together, and this unity stands as the most reliable guarantee for Russia’s future,” he affirmed.

What Putin said two decades ago

The current address was delivered from the Kremlin environment, whereas a year earlier it was recorded at the Southern Military District headquarters in Rostov-on-Don, among participants in the military operation in Ukraine. He also used the occasion to congratulate Russians on the New Year as he prepared for another election campaign.

Twenty years ago, the address was first delivered on December 31, 2003. In 2004, Putin sought reelection after his initial term, and his remarks then reflected the nation’s challenges at the time.

“Many problems remained unresolved, yet we sought and found the needed solutions together. All we achieved came from hard work throughout the year, benefiting families and communities. This effort contributed to our shared success and gave credibility and dignity to the Russian people as a whole. There were clear advances in both the economy and public life, and it is right to call the past year generally successful,” the president observed.

In his 2003 New Year’s remarks, Putin specifically noted the growth in Russia’s population compared with the prior year, describing it as a positive sign that underscored a confident outlook for the future.

Messages to Russians in 2017

The 2017 New Year address marked the second time Putin used the moment of election-related reflection to speak of the family-centered nature of the holiday. He spoke of Russians approaching the season with anticipation of meaningful changes.

“If each person remembers their parents, cares for them, values every moment with family, understands their children and supports those who are close and in need, those actions will bring about engagement and moral generosity,” Putin said.

In that speech, the president thanked Russians for their faith in the country and for their hard work and its outcomes. He wished the citizens success and prosperity.

“May there be better moments for every person and family in the new year. May health be strong, may children be born and bring us happiness. May peace and prosperity return to our great Russia, our beloved and only Russia,” Putin concluded his remarks.
