At the Eastern Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about Arkady Volozh, co-founder of Yandex, suggesting that the former CEO’s criticisms of Russia’s actions in Ukraine were influenced by Volozh’s relocation to Israel. Putin indicated that living in Israel could have driven Volozh to make statements aimed at maintaining decent living standards and favorable relations with Israeli authorities.
Putin noted that Volozh had been silent for an extended period before deciding to voice his critique of the Russian Federation’s conduct in Ukraine. He also acknowledged Volozh’s talent and his success in building a notable technology company. While wishing him well in Israel, Putin stressed that Russians who achieve prosperity should retain a sense of conscience about their home country’s affairs.
Volozh stepped down as Yandex’s chief executive and relinquished leadership roles in the group’s international subsidiaries in June 2022 after the company was placed on the European Union sanctions list.
Toward the end of August, reports from The Financial Times indicated that the former Yandex CEO had petitioned EU officials to lift his sanctions, a move that drew further attention to the ongoing dispute over the company’s status in Europe.
In commenting on the situation, Putin concluded with a provocative remark, echoing a familiar political soundbite: “The frog is on our side.” [FT attribution]
