Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated on RMF FM that work is underway on the eleventh package of sanctions, and that it will arrive in due course. He emphasized that beyond introducing a new EU package, there is a need to tighten the existing rounds as well. The goal, he explained, is to ensure that current measures remain robust and effective rather than becoming outdated or ineffective.
According to Morawiecki, discussing the strengthening of the existing sanctions is as important as moving forward with new steps. In conversations with Brussels diplomats, avoiding stricter sanctions is sometimes treated as a stand-in topic for the next rounds, which should not be the case. The prime minister called for a clear and continuous approach to penalties that reflect the evolving situation and the demand for firm action.

Morawiecki acknowledged that the European Union is feeling weariness about events in Ukraine. He described the strain as visible and urged European partners to recognize the gravity of the moment. The Polish government believes that Europe stands at a decisive historical juncture, requiring an appropriate response that demonstrates resolve. He expressed cautious optimism that allies can be persuaded to approve further rounds of sanctions and to intensify the existing measures as the crisis persists.
The prime minister also addressed Poland’s stance toward Belarus under President Lukashenko. Poland is prepared to tighten borders or limit passages further if needed. The government has signaled its willingness to take stronger actions against Belarusian trade to deter repression that opposes the regime. Morawiecki recalled meeting the wife of Nobel laureate Ales Byalyatski in Poland, who described the harsh treatment faced by opponents of Lukashenko. The message from Warsaw, made in Brussels and echoed in coordination with Lithuania, is clear: Belarus cannot be allowed to continue suppressing dissent. The Polish leadership affirmed that the issue will remain on the international agenda and will be raised publicly to ensure accountability and a firm stance against repression.
In this context, the Polish government underscored its commitment to maintaining pressure on both Russia and Belarus, while coordinating closely with EU partners to ensure that sanctions remain effective and aligned with broader European security goals. The discussions highlighted a belief that unity within the EU is essential to exert the needed influence and deliver a concrete, sustained response to the challenges posed by the situation in Ukraine and the actions of neighboring regimes. The emphasis was on practical measures, continuous evaluation, and a readiness to adjust policies as events unfold and as partners see fit to act more decisively. By maintaining a steady course, Poland aims to contribute to a robust European response that can deter aggression and support those who seek democratic freedoms and stability in the region.
