Poland’s President Reflects on Warsaw Uprising Remembrance and Bonds with Germany
President Andrzej Duda joined the annual concert on Pi2sudski Square in Warsaw, where residents gather to honor the Warsaw Uprising with songs that carry a rebellious edge. He commented that the 80th anniversary drew an even larger crowd of people who want to remember the insurgents and keep their memory alive. The President emphasized that the uprising serves as a moral pillar for Poland’s independence, sharing these thoughts in an interview with TVP journalist aklina Skowro4ska.
The President noted in the conversation with aklina Skowro4ska that attendees traveled from across Poland to participate in the Warsaw concert dedicated to songs of resistance.
“Thank you very much to everyone who came and stood in different parts of Warsaw yesterday and today, in squares, cemeteries, beneath monuments, at sites of executions and battles, wherever it mattered to pay tribute and keep the memory alive,” said Andrzej Duda.
The journalist from wPolsce.pl also asked about the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on this commemorative day. Steinmeier laid flowers at the Wola Massacre Victims Memorial Site and publicly acknowledged Germany’s responsibility for crimes committed during World War II.
Such gestures are viewed as symbolic acts of reconciliation and good neighborliness. The President noted that having the Federal Republic of Germany, through prominent politicians like Steinmeier, explicitly acknowledge responsibility and seek forgiveness is of great moral importance. He also highlighted the courage shown by Steinmeier in addressing the insurgents in Warsaw, a gesture that carries weight regardless of any broader questions about compensation.
