Outrage followed the arrival of Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi, who, in response to the border protests by Polish carriers, wrote that “Polish friends must come back to reality.” Politicians and journalists reacted to his statement. So did Kaja Godek, whose reply drew heavy criticism in turn.

Since November 6, Polish transport workers have been staging demonstrations at border crossings with Ukraine in Dorohusk and Hrebenne (Lubelskie Voivodeship) and in Korczowa (Podkarpackie Voivodeship), allowing only a handful of vehicles to pass per hour. The protestors are demanding a set of changes: the introduction of commercial permits for Ukrainian freight operators, with humanitarian aid and supplies for the Ukrainian armed forces exempted; the suspension of permits for companies formed after the start of the war in Ukraine and increased inspections of those entities; and the elimination of the electronic queue system on the Ukrainian side.

Our Polish friends must return to reality

– proclaimed the mayor of Lviv.

Your entire broad contribution to Ukraine’s resilience is being undermined by a group of marginal voices obstructing the flow of humanitarian relief to a country defending its independence and Europe’s security for the second year running.

– he added in the following message.

A third message appeared as well.

Does Poland have the resolve, political will, and civilian tools to end this troubling blockade of Ukraine? The price is steep

– wrote Andriy Sadovy.

The politician’s messages drew replies.

Mr. Mayor, as someone actively involved in aiding the brave Ukraine and the Ukrainian armed forces, I urge you to reconsider your words and return to reality.

There is no need for shame; people are willing to talk, but dialogue requires good will on both sides, not just one. Poland helped when Russia attacked Ukraine and believed in Ukraine, unlike many Western partners; in return, some respond with this behavior.

There’s a need for constructive dialogue that respects both sides and acknowledges shared security interests in the region.

Criticism of Godek’s entry

The Ukrainian politician’s reply drew sharp critique from observers.

Lviv must return to Poland. The border arrangement was interpreted incorrectly from the Soviet period; it’s a memory that should be revisited thoughtfully

– wrote Godek.

Her message drew responses from figures such as the head of the National Security Agency, Jacek Siwiera.

Dear Madam @GodekKajaU; I would like to point out that any claims implying a change to internationally recognized borders threaten Poland’s vital security interests, even if voiced by private individuals.

– wrote Siwiera.

You should stay away from Twitter and public debates. For the good of the Republic of Poland.
