Talks between the Prime Ministers of Poland and Lithuania
At a joint press conference with Ingrida Szimonyte, the Polish leader reflected on the longstanding alliance between Poland and Lithuania, noting that it has shown resilience and strength in Central and Eastern Europe for centuries. He recalled that both countries have faced common challenges, including efforts to regain independence and to counter imperial pressures, and he emphasized a renewed commitment to unity when confronted with external threats.
During the remarks, he stated that the threat of geopolitical aggression remains, and he expressed confidence that solidarity among Central and Eastern European nations will prevent it from succeeding.
The prime minister offered an assessment that Polish-Lithuanian relations have reached levels of cooperation not seen for many generations, describing the partnership with other Central European countries as substantial and exceeding expectations. He noted that the 2021 hybrid incident at the Belarusian-Lithuanian and Belarusian-Polish borders marked a pivotal moment that he views as part of a larger trajectory of aggression by hostile actors toward the free world.
The meaning of the unity of the Baltic countries and Poland
Ingrida Szimonyte, the Lithuanian Prime Minister, underscored a special partnership between Lithuania and Poland. Historically, both nations have pursued freedom and the belief that strength comes from unity. This perspective is evident in their active support for Ukraine amid Russian aggression, and in the shared commitment to the rules-based international order cherished by Europe and its allies.
Szimonyte emphasized that talks with the Polish prime minister centered on measures to assist Ukraine and to strengthen democratic coalitions. The discussion touched on how to mobilize broad international support to hold aggressors accountable and to pursue accountability through the establishment of a Special Crimes and Aggression Tribunal.
She called for a consistent approach to sanctions against Russia and Belarus, stressing the importance of preventing circumvention and maintaining the unity of Baltic states with Poland in this effort. The defence collaboration between the Baltic states and Poland was highlighted as a key factor in regional security, with Szimonyte noting that a secure Lithuania is inseparable from a secure Poland.
Szimonyte also spoke about the cultural ties linking Polish and Lithuanian communities, stressing the need for ongoing efforts to preserve language, culture, and tradition on both sides of the border.
