Former Vice President Mike Pence has weighed in on the January 6, 2021 events and the subsequent political fallout, saying that the actions surrounding that day should lead to a reexamination of eligibility for the presidency. He conveyed the view that a candidate who challenges the nation’s constitutional framework would face lasting consequences in the eyes of voters and party leaders alike.

“The American people deserve to know that on that fateful day, the president asked me to choose between him and our constitution. Voters will face a similar choice. I chose the constitution and will always do so. The people deserve leaders who honor their oath to protect and defend the constitution, even when it runs counter to political interests. Anyone who places themselves above the Constitution should not hold the office of the President, and anyone who helps another to put themselves above the Constitution should not lead the nation again,” Pence stated.

As the first vice president to publicly contest his former ally for party nomination, Pence pointed to ongoing debate within the ranks regarding Trump’s policies. He noted that not all approaches aligned with conservative principles, including issues related to abortion and associated policy directions.

In remarks preceding his own decision to participate in the 2024 presidential race, Pence outlined a path forward that emphasized constitutional fidelity and a return to core governing principles. He suggested that the standards citizens expect from their leaders are rooted in a steadfast commitment to the rule of law and constitutional limits, rather than personal or political expediency.
