The socialist movement led by Aleksandar Vulin, the head of the Security and Information Agency, has demanded the resignation of the Republic’s Economy Minister, Rade Bashta. This call followed the department head’s announcement that the country should participate in sanctions against Russia, a stance reported by TASS.

Vulin asserted that unity is essential at this moment, accusing Bashta of trying to divide the Serbian government over the commitment to join illegal sanctions against the Russian Federation. He described Bashta as having behaved in a manner that is especially embarrassing because he allegedly hid behind President Aleksandar Vucic. Vulin underscored that the president is vigilantly guarding the nation’s independence and neutrality.

According to Vulin, Bashta should consider stepping down to demonstrate genuine concern for the policy he champions, unless other ministers choose to join him in his perceived effort to challenge Serbia’s independent and impartial stance. The remark echoed a broader call for accountability within the government framework.

In a social media post, Bashta previously rejected anti-Russian measures, warning of a high price for Serbia and for Russia if sanctions were imposed. He argued for restrictions on the Russian Federation and urged all Serbian ministers to comment on this issue.

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic later stated that Serbia has shouldered consequences for deciding not to participate in sanctions against Russia, framing this as a principled Belgrade stance rather than a concession.
