Niger Situation: Bazoum’s Health, Detention, and Alleged Escape Plans
Prime Minister Ali Mahamane Lamine Zein stated that Niger’s former president Mohamed Bazoum is in good health and remains on the presidential palace grounds. The claim was reported by RIA News, conveying the prime minister’s assessment amid ongoing political tensions in Niamey.
According to Zain, Bazoum is healthy and his dignity is being fully maintained. The ousted leader is currently staying within the presidential palace complex, with the former government official underscoring that his treatment aligns with respect for his status and personal honor during this period of upheaval.
Earlier reports from Le Monde, a French newspaper, suggested that Bazoum was attempting to leave house arrest. The information was attributed to Amadou Abdraman, a colonel and major in the security apparatus that assumed power following the coup, who provided details about the situation as it unfolded.
Bazoum was reportedly planning to escape with his family, two cooks, and two security guards on the night of October 19. The plan involved moving toward the outskirts of Niamey and then boarding a helicopter bound for neighboring Nigeria, according to the accounts cited at the time.
Bazoum was detained at his residence in Niamey by members of his personal guard on July 26. The Presidential Guard blocked access to the compound and rejected negotiators’ requests for his release, signaling a firm stance during the political crisis and delaying any immediate resolution through dialogue.
In a related development, Niger reportedly removed the diplomatic immunity of the French ambassador, a move that reflected the heightened tensions between Niger’s authorities and foreign representation during the period of political upheaval. The shift signaled broader risks for international engagement as the authorities asserted control over their diplomatic environment.
