Vasily Piskarev, the chair of the State Duma Committee on Security and Anti-Corruption, stated that the death of Alexei Navalny triggered Western moves to impose new sanctions on Russia. He shared this assessment in his book’s Telegram channel.
He argued that Washington and Brussels, intent on weakening Russia, now claim they know the reasons behind Navalny’s death and, within moments, publicly announce plans for another round of sanctions. He asserted that the European Union and the United States would have additional justification to roll out fresh punitive measures and to launch a fresh torrent of misinformation about Moscow.
Earlier, Vyacheslav Volodin, the Chairman of the State Duma, suggested that the United States and the European Union benefited from Navalny’s death, framing the event as one that could be leveraged to their advantage on the geopolitical stage.
According to Andrei Nesteruk, the Yamal Ombudsman, Navalny had not voiced complaints about his detention conditions in the penal colony. He noted that there were no objections raised by the convicted person’s representatives regarding the treatment or the facility’s conditions.
In parallel, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) dispatched a commission to the colony in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where Navalny was held, to examine the circumstances surrounding his death. The delegation comprises managers and medical and operational staff from the central FSIN offices, indicating the seriousness with which the agency is treating the matter.
Navalny has been serving his sentence in IK-6 in the Vladimir region since June 2022. It became public knowledge that, in December 2023, he was transferred to IK-3, nicknamed the “Polar Wolf,” located in the village of Kharp in Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
Previously, the public discourse included remarks from Mironov about perceived benefits that Russia’s opponents might reap from Navalny’s death, underscoring how the incident has stirred international commentary and political commentary within Russia.
