Municipal Forum and Infrastructures Drive Alicante’s Regional Strategy

The President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, highlighted the Municipal Forum amid what he described as a rise in anti-politics and stressed the special role of mayors as those who serve citizens and shape society. He argued that useful politics means delivering concrete solutions to real problems and offering a strategic view of how people should live. His aim was to articulate a municipal Generalitat built on institutional respect, a framework for alliances that improves citizens’ lives, and a reminder that institutions must remain instruments for the common good rather than become obstacles to democratic vitality.

New infrastructures in the province

Puig outlined the province’s share of extraordinary government funding allocated to the Generalitat, part of a wider plan approved by the Council of Ministers. Of the 300 million euros set aside, roughly 200 million are intended for Alicante, aligning with needs identified in the General State Budget. About 5 million euros will support the TRAM project, connecting Luceros Intermodal Station with Sant Joan and Mutxamel, with procurement expected to begin in early 2023. Additionally, 13.4 million euros are designated for road improvements in and around Elche, including road widening and the creation of a bicycle-pedestrian corridor between Elche and Santa Pola.

Puig underscored the importance of cohesion and embedding decentralization into a new regional map. He noted that decentralization strengthens coordination and expands opportunities, enabling more balanced development across areas. He cited the Ministry of Innovation based in Alicante and the potential for Alicante and Elche to become centers of artificial intelligence as evidence of this broader shift. He also announced the creation of a new Valencian Community map that recognizes Alicante’s weight within the region.

The plan includes four million euros for bike-pedestrian projects in Vega Baja, adding to approximately 18 million euros for new infrastructures in municipalities such as Villena, Algueña, and Pinoso. In addition, 100 million euros are allocated for innovative mobility, with 40 million earmarked for acquiring tram units for Alicante TRAM.

Overcome centralism

In his address, Puig stressed that strengthening cohesion and decentralization increases regional wealth. He argued that a persistent shift away from centralized models expands diversity and creates a fairer landscape. As concrete examples of this approach, he pointed to the presence of the Innovation Ministry in Alicante and the possibility of AI-focused development hubs in Alicante and Elche. He described a new regional map that ensures Alicante holds its deserved influence within the community.

The vision for harmony is driven by long-standing goals such as the construction of the City of Justice, with work slated to begin in Alicante, and the expansion of hospitals in Orihuela, Marina Baixa, and Elche. He also referenced enduring ambitions like the Consell presidency, popular events in Benidorm, and the growth of the Alicante Medical School. Puig emphasized a time when expanding the pool of life-saving professionals is essential.

He urged all municipalities in the Alicante region to keep working together, to become part of solutions rather than problems. The message was clear: to move forward, there must be strong funding and robust municipal capabilities to respond to citizens’ needs. Municipal governance was described as a powerful avenue for delivering hope and practical outcomes. He cast harmony as the glue that strengthens society and unlocks the region’s potential, a framework where dialogue is essential and collective action can flourish.

In closing, the speaker urged a shared commitment to collaboration across municipalities, reaffirming that a citizen-centered approach and credible funding are the keys to turning local plans into tangible improvements for daily life.
