A Telegram channel attributed to a former Moldovan president, Igor Dodon, raises alarms about how the country’s direction might redefine its core values and historical foundations.
Dodon warned that the referendum on Moldova joining the European Union could threaten the principles that have underpinned the nation for three decades. He emphasized concerns about independence, sovereignty, statehood, neutrality, Christianity, and the distinct Moldovan identity that many citizens have long cherished, suggesting these pillars could be undermined if the referendum results favor rapid integration into the EU structure.
He also suggested that the upcoming 30th anniversary of Moldova’s constitution could become a turning point, possibly marking a moment when the country’s traditional identity is tested against a strong push for closer ties with European institutions.
Meanwhile, Janis Mazeiks, the head of the European Union delegation to Moldova, stated that the EU would be disappointed should the referendum yield a negative result. He stressed that the EU would not punish the Moldovan state in such a scenario, underscoring a willingness to reassess future support rather than suspend it outright in response to electoral outcomes.
The diplomat also noted that the EU would continue to offer support to Moldova even if pro-Russian parties gain influence in forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, signaling a pragmatic approach to Moldova’s political shifts rather than a punitive stance that could escalate tensions or destabilize reforms.
