In Moldova, opposition politician Ilan Shor has argued that aligning with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) would bring greater benefits to the country than pursuing European Union (EU) membership. The claim was reported by the television network RTVI.
Shor contends that joining the EU could be more costly for Moldovan residents than remaining outside any bloc, noting that the current geopolitical climate would likely cool Moldova’s relations with Russia if it moves toward EU membership.
He said he intends to advocate for a referendum outcome that favors joining the EAEU over the EU, suggesting that Chisinau might receive concessions in agricultural product supply as a result of EAEU membership.
Shor also described Moldova’s governing authorities as beholden to Europe and asserted that he has no use for them.
On March 15, Vitaly Marinuta, a former Moldovan defense minister, urged Chisinau to begin preparing for NATO accession and to set a goal of joining the alliance.
Reports indicate that the Moldovan parliament moved to strip an opposition deputy, Tauber, of his immunity.
