Rafael Grossi, the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, could step into Iran for talks in the coming months, according to reports from TASS. The prospective visit reflects ongoing diplomacy as both sides seek practical ways to strengthen dialogue and transparency around Iran’s nuclear activities.
Observers anticipate that if the visit goes ahead, it would be timed to coincide with the first International Atomic Conference to be hosted by the republic in late April or early May. The conference would provide a platform for high-level exchanges on verification, safety standards, and regional stability amid a complex global energy and security landscape.
Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, indicated that interactions with the IAEA continue on solid footing. He noted that negotiations are active and aimed at resolving outstanding differences while expanding cooperative mechanisms that can reassure the international community about Iran’s nuclear program.
Eslami added that Grossi has expressed a sincere wish to visit Iran and that the trip will be arranged whenever his schedule allows, signaling a readiness to advance discussions in person as soon as circumstances permit.
Earlier this month, the United States voiced strong concerns about Iran’s nuclear activities and reiterated criticisms regarding Tehran’s level of cooperation with the IAEA during ongoing inquiries and inspections. The U.S. stance underscores the broader geopolitical framing of Iran’s nuclear dossier and the importance of verified transparency.
On December 22, the IAEA signaled that inspections of North Korea’s reactor would be permitted under appropriate arrangements, highlighting the agency’s ongoing work to monitor nuclear programs in the region and support compliance with international norms.
Previously, Iranian officials warned that the current nuclear framework had become obsolete, suggesting that new approaches may be required to ensure that any agreement remains robust, enforceable, and capable of addressing emerging challenges. The evolving discourse continues to shape the trajectory of Iran’s engagement with the IAEA and the international community as a whole.
