Giorgia Meloni on Ukraine Peace Talks and Security Aid

Giorgia Meloni, the Italian prime minister, stated that there are not yet the conditions required to begin negotiations over Ukraine, and that such conditions must eventually emerge if a just peace is to be achieved. She emphasized that the process of dialogue cannot rush forward without the necessary groundwork, and she urged sustained effort toward creating an opening for talks while the conflict continues.

Meloni added that Italy has provided Ukraine with military equipment and ammunition with a clear aim: to keep the fighting away from the core of Europe and reduce spillover risks to neighboring regions. This support reflects a broader strategy to deter escalation and to preserve stability across the continent while the international community seeks diplomatic avenues.

Reports indicate that roughly 20 Ukrainian soldiers received training at an Italian military facility in Sabaudia, in the Lazio region, prior to the deployment of SAMP-T anti-aircraft missile systems to Ukraine as part of ongoing security assistance. The training aligns with Italy’s commitment to strengthen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in the face of ongoing hostilities.

The discussion around the missile systems, which Italy intends to supply in coordination with France, pointed to a plan to have the systems sent to Ukraine by the end of the spring. In addition, there was mention of relocating Ukrainian personnel to Sardinia to participate in live-fire exercises and skill development, reinforcing practical readiness for operating advanced air defense assets.
