EU sanctions Russia and Iran: bold measures and the return of war to Europe

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the 10th package of EU sanctions targets Russia with trade bans and technology export controls valued at €11 billion. The aim is to curb Moscow’s capacity to sustain its war effort and to limit access to crucial technologies that fuel military production. This package was unveiled in early January and is awaiting adoption by EU member states.

Sanctions against Iran

Von der Leyen also highlighted that Russia has deployed hundreds of Iranian drones on Ukrainian battlefields. These drones have caused civilian harm, prompting the EU to propose sanctions on Iranian entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. The move reflects a broader commitment to holding those involved in the conflict accountable and reducing the allowing of illicit hardware and support used in the war.

The war has returned to Europe

In remarks tied to the approaching anniversary of the Russian invasion, Von der Leyen recalled the night of February 24 when Moscow launched a full-scale assault on Ukraine. That moment marked a turning point for European security. The EU watched with concern as Donbas and Kiev faced the onslaught, then witnessed the resilience of Ukrainian civilians and troops. As the anniversary approached, leaders acknowledged that Putin’s aggressive strategy faced growing resistance from the Ukrainian people and their allies. The EU’s stance has remained steadfast, reinforcing support for Ukraine and sanctions as a tool to deter further aggression.

Looking back, the Parliament welcomed the leadership of Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky, recognizing his resolve and the unity shown by European partners. The year that followed saw painful losses and hard choices, yet Ukraine’s determination and the courage of its people continued to shape the continent’s response. The EU underscored that Russia’s imperial ambitions have not achieved their aims, while Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic future have grown stronger in the face of aggression.
