Ximo Puig, the head of the regional government, announced that a meeting will take place next week between social representatives and the Generalitat to discuss the energy saving plan drafted by the central government and to review the additional measures the community is implementing. Speaking with leaders from the Community, Puig emphasized the importance of moving forward in harmony with Madrid, under Isabel Díaz Ayuso, and avoiding friction in other regions. For him, the main objective is to safeguard the ongoing operation of all economic sectors amid the challenging circumstances created by the war in Ukraine. He urged citizens to collaborate, sharing responsibility across society.
Puig defended the plan, which has the backing of the national administration led by Pedro Sánchez, describing it as containing prudent, well-considered steps. “We must spend less, prioritize efficiency, and at the same time increase green energy production.” He rejected critiques that questioned the necessity of reducing energy consumption in the current context, labeling such objections as irresponsible. He added that even the most radical populism should have clear red lines, a stance he reiterated after a meeting with mayors from small, sparsely populated towns in Vall d’Alcalà. On Monday, the regional government called together officials from Energy, Tourism and Commerce to discuss the energy conservation strategy in detail.
The regional leadership assessed that the measures proposed by the national administration are straightforward and do not arouse suspicion, countering opposition concerns about opacity or hidden agendas. Puig underscored that there should be limits to political rhetoric and warned against excesses that could undermine policy legitimacy.
From the Generalitat’s perspective, the energy saving plan is meant to support industrial and economic activity across the Valencian Community. Puig stressed that the European context already presents a tough landscape, and that the objective is to align social awareness with practical, non-punitive approaches. He called for shared governance and joint responsibility among all levels of administration to advance this path, aiming to protect jobs and ensure stable energy supply while the broader European situation remains unsettled. In this approach, collaboration and clear communication are prioritized to sustain economic momentum in Valencia and beyond, even as the region considers the diverse needs of its businesses and residents.
