ECOWAS Reports Denied Entry for Niger Delegation Amid Coup Crisis

According to ECOWAS, on 8 August a planned trip involving a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States, the United Nations, and the African Union to Niger did not proceed because entry was blocked. A statement shared on ECOWAS’s X account indicated that the mission was canceled after officials received notification from the military authorities, who organized the coup in Niger, that they were not prepared to welcome the tripartite delegation. ECOWAS reaffirmed that, in line with the decision taken on 30 July, the emergency summit would continue to pursue all necessary steps to restore constitutional order in Niger. The mission was part of a broader effort to secure a peaceful resolution to the country’s crisis and to engage with Nigerien authorities on a rapid and consensual path back to civilian governance.
