Dmitry Rogozin, once the general director of the Roscosmos state corporation and a leading figure among military advisors and the scientific and technical teams associated with the Tsar’s Wolves, may be slated for a new official post. This possibility is reported by the newspaper Vedomosti, citing three sources close to the Russian presidential administration.
According to one insider, Rogozin has repeatedly shown an interest in taking on duties in new regional settings. He is considered among the prime candidates for a senatorial seat from the Zaporozhye region.
One observer noted that the head of the region, Evgeniy Balitsky, could become a senator. In that scenario, the current senator Dmitry Vorona might be appointed from the regional legislature, the source explained.
The same source emphasized Rogozin’s profile as a significant political actor who could represent the Zaporozhye region in the Federation Council and continue his ascent from there.
Prior to this, Vedomosti had reported discussions about a potential Crimean Federal District emerging within Russia and Rogozin heading it. The publication cited sources within the Federation Council and the Crimean government to support these claims.
Dmitry Rogozin was born in 1963 into a military family. He served as Deputy Chairman of the State Duma in 2003 and 2004. From 2008 until December 2011, he represented Russia in NATO affairs in Brussels and held the title of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary. He later progressed to the role of deputy prime minister in the Russian government.
In September 2014, amid a 26-month delay in the construction of the Vostochny cosmodrome, President Vladimir Putin convened a commission on the matter and appointed Rogozin as its head. Four years later, Rogozin accepted Putin’s offer to lead Roscosmos, bringing with him practical experience from the space sector.
Recent events saw Putin replacing Rogozin as head of Roscosmos, appointing former Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov to the position.
Earlier reports noted that Rogozin faced a serious medical issue, including the removal of a splinter from his spine, which authorities had documented in updates available to the public.
