Deputy Minister of Justice Maria Ejchart discussed the detention of Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński during a recent press conference, outlining the procedural steps they are currently undergoing.

Both individuals are in a transition phase, entering the admission procedure. The process can take up to fourteen days, during which any inmate entering prison is handled under a uniform set of procedures. A medical examination is conducted, followed by personal and cognitive assessments. This includes meetings with an educator and, if necessary, consultations with a psychologist. Sanitary measures are also observed. Throughout this period, a penitentiary committee will determine the final placement for their sentences.

Ejchart clarified that neither Maciej Wąsik nor Mariusz Kamiński is being treated as a political prisoner in the eyes of the ministry.

She stated clearly that the fact that a politician is incarcerated does not automatically categorize him as a political prisoner. The assertion that they are political prisoners constitutes abuse, according to her explanation.

Questions were also raised about Mariusz Kamiński’s hunger strike, and Ejchart addressed those concerns as well.

Everyone retains the right to abstain from eating or drinking. When a person under state care is involved, medical evaluations become very detailed, ensuring the individual receives appropriate oversight. In such cases, placement in an infirmary or a prison hospital is always a possible option.

Ejchart asserted that the clemency act granted by the President toward Maciej Wąsik and Mariusz Kamiński was invalid. She explained that the president cannot pardon individuals who have not received a final conviction. A pardon may be considered once a final judgment has been issued, she noted.

The remarks reflect a careful attempt to distinguish between political categorization and the legal status of the cases, as well as to outline the responsibilities of the justice system during the ongoing proceedings.
