The question of the relationship between authority and the Church

During Monday’s briefing, a journalist asked for an assessment of last weekend’s events in Jasna Góra in light of the episcopate’s May appeal to keep church and politics apart.

The Church is completely, absolutely and unconditionally separated from state institutions,

said the prime minister.

To insinuate that the church is in any way separate from the state is completely unjustified and untrue, he added. He also noted that the relationship between the state and the church has been defined by a concordat for more than three decades.

Pilgrimage of the Radio Maryja Families to Jasna Góra

On Sunday, tens of thousands of believers joined the 32nd pilgrimage to Jasna Góra organized by Radio Maryja Families. The ceremonies in Wały Jasnogórskie saw participation from government representatives, including Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński, along with deputies, senators and PiS officials from local government.

The president of PiS, speaking at the Holy Mass, addressed the audience with a message about sovereignty and the enduring strength of national traditions, emphasizing that attempts to erase these foundations have been openly voiced before.

The speaker warned that there are forces seeking to alter the nation and erode the long-standing community that has stood for more than a thousand years.

Call for “Abandon Instrumentalization of the Church”

On May 2, a meeting of the Permanent Council of the Polish Episcopal Conference, led by Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, convened at Jasna Góra. In a later communiqué, the bishops spoke about the upcoming elections in Poland.

The Permanent Council affirmed the legitimate autonomy of the democratic order and expressed the belief that Polish politics, despite deep differences and divisions, can and should remain a prudent concern for the common good.

They noted that, in line with the social teaching of the Church, politics should be a call to love for one’s neighbor, expressed through service to life, human dignity, liberty, justice, solidarity, and family rights. They urged all participants in the election campaigns not to instrumentalize the Church.

There are parliamentary elections in October.
