The editorial staff of Deutsche Welle reported that the planned visit of Bundesrat President Manuela Schwesig to Poland was postponed by the Senate, following protests from PiS politicians. The Senate has offered a rather vague explanation for the delay, saying the postponement stems from difficulties in fixing February 2024 timeframes, which were influenced by the pace of other political events.

The Senate Chancellery’s press service told PAP that Schwesig’s February visit has been deferred to a later date to be set by the chancelleries of both parliaments.

The stated reason for delaying the visit is the challenge of pinpointing a February 2024 window that would accommodate the trip, a challenge described as arising from the dynamics of other political developments, according to the Senate’s account.

– the Senate noted.

The Senate Chancellery emphasized ongoing strong ties with the German Bundesrat since 1993, including engagement at the level of parliamentary speakers. The institutions intend to continue their cooperation to ensure smooth dialogue and collaboration.

Manuela Schwesig, the President of the German Federal Council and Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, was slated to make her first foreign trip as Bundesrat head to Poland at the end of February, following an invitation from the Senate President Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska.

Polish editors of Deutsche Welle reported that the Senate had withdrawn from inviting the Bundesrat President to Poland, noting protests by opposition politicians. On Tuesday, the Bundesrat’s press service confirmed to Deutsche Welle’s editors that the visit and a planned meeting between the Bundesrat President and the Polish Senate President would occur as scheduled. Schwesig also hoped to bring representatives from German companies in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to Poland, the state she governs.

Schwesig’s stance on Nord Stream 2

The Prime Minister of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has faced criticism in Poland for her support of the Nord Stream 2 gas project connecting Russia and Germany via the Baltic Sea. The project drew sharp opposition from Poland and was not launched following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as noted by media coverage.

Schwesig has served as Bundesrat president since November, guiding the second chamber of Germany’s parliament, alongside the Bundestag. The president of the Bundesrat is elected for a one-year term from among the state prime ministers.

In retrospect, the Senate’s answer regarding the postponement remained somewhat cryptic. Questions persist about whether the underlying truth will be openly acknowledged.
