Leszek Balcerowicz publicly expressed admiration for Ryszard Petru, who Balcerowicz views as a potential future Minister of Finance, a sentiment he shared through the head of MAP, Jacek Sasin.
Balcerowicz’s endorsement of Petru
The question on many lips was who might head the Ministry of Finance in a possible new government led by Donald Tusk. Balcerowicz, an economist who has long advocated examining social program expenditures and the potential for raising the retirement age, singled out his former PhD student Ryszard Petru as a suitable candidate for that role.
Balcerowicz reflected on his academic journey, noting that Petru had distinguished himself during his studies and later in public life. In Balcerowicz’s view, Petru’s campaign helped him secure a seat in the parliament, and the economist’s praise carried weight given Balcerowicz’s stature in economic policy discussions.
On the X platform, Balcerowicz reinforced his position, praising the former head of Nowoczesna and signaling that Petru could play a leading role in the future coalition’s economic team. The message underscored a possibility that some observers had considered a real option for the next government.
Balcerowicz added that the current state of public finances, as he saw it, required a strong and capable Minister of Finance. He explicitly stated his preference for Petru, suggesting that he would be a suitable driver of fiscal policy and economic reform if the political landscape allowed it.

Sasin widens the list
Jacek Sasin, who oversees state assets, responded to the proposal with his own list of notable names for consideration by Balcerowicz and the public. He suggested adding Janusz Lewandowski to handle privatization matters and Sławomir Nowak for infrastructure leadership. He also noted that Karpiński was preoccupied due to commitments in the European Parliament, while the Left and PSL appeared to be increasingly hopeful about their prospects.
