Aitana Mas stands as the leading conciliator for the Alicante district, shaping policy with a focus on equality and feminism. Education reform, health, mobility, urban planning, and the regional economy are all guided by a people-centered approach that prioritizes women. The coalition advocates cross-feminism to improve daily life through concrete actions across local governance and regional programs.
The current vice president and Equality councilor in Consell indicates that the Valencia Equality Law ranks among the early measures the Valencian Parliament aims to pass. It spans from urbanism to sports, placing incentives at the heart of economic and social relations while advancing egalitarian ties. The emphasis is on shared responsibility and a distinctly class-conscious feminism that challenges entrenched inequalities. It is a plan that acknowledges the ground beneath our feet, including soil used to build cities.
Questions to be developed
Crevillente’s policy team assessed Consell’s eight years in office, acknowledging ongoing issues and the need for improvement. Proposals include creating birth centers within the health system and replicating successful educational models to curb gender discrimination in subsidized schools. An initiative from Castellón is envisioned to extend to other public hospitals, enabling women to choose their preferred birth model and eliminating obstetric violence.
Aitana Mas also discussed enforcing leave for families affected by pregnancy loss, perinatal or neonatal death. The plan calls for an agreement that reduces gendered labor disparities, fosters wage transparency and negotiation between women and men, and strengthens reconciliation measures within companies. It also supports autonomous women who plan to become mothers by providing early hire assistance so they can transfer client portfolios without losing work, ensuring stability for self-employed women.
“We want a business gender agreement that emphasizes reducing the pay gap between women and men and talks about reconciliation measures within the company,” says Mas.
Social Service Housing
Top of the Cortes agenda for Alicante is public sector employment with Compromís. The agenda includes expanding social services, a heavily feminized field, and pushing for the public administration of cleaning, cooking, and laundry in social service centers and residences, schools, hospitals, and health centers. It also addresses job insecurity affecting women in the tourism sector.
Mas also urged a 32-hour workweek without salary loss and other measures that guarantee life balance. This includes expanding free child care from birth to age three, creating day care centers within twenty minutes of home, and extending maternity leave as part of broader family-friendly policies.
Program measures
The Compromís electoral program foregrounds feminist policies, gender equality, and women’s rights, applying a cross-cutting lens across education, health, mobility, urban planning, and the economy. The coalition envisions a city model for the 21st century with bold measures to secure new rights and robust public services for neighbors. There is a clear priority to make the municipality more feminist by embracing the LGTBI community, as Esther Díez affirmed.
Actions in Elx are framed as advancing gender perspectives and sexual diversity across municipal policies. Cross-cutting initiatives will shape all government activity, with close collaboration alongside the Ministry of Equality, currently led by Aitana Mas, and aligned with the Valencian region’s broader measures, including pioneering reforms such as the Trans Act. These efforts aim to deliver a higher quality of life and a more inclusive city, a common goal across governance.
Specific resources
The Compromís program for Elx seeks to broaden reconciliation policies and shared responsibility to ease the burden on many women. It proposes expanding the Concilia Plan with extracurricular activities and special resources during school holidays, plus support for children with disabilities and mothers who carry a traditional caregiving load. The aim is to make life more manageable for families while maintaining robust public services.
The plan also supports a 32-hour workweek at both regional and municipal levels, promoting work-life balance and gender equity. Urban development will reflect gender and sexual diversity to ensure an accessible, inclusive city with reliable local services and strengthened public transportation. Visibility for women and LGTBI representatives in the public sphere is a priority. When discussing a greener city, the focus is on creating a humane, inclusive urban environment.
Prevention
In education, Díez emphasizes the importance of Equality advocates present in every educational center, extending prevention of sexist violence across all levels. Free extracurricular activities will assist families, accompanied by programs for teachers and family associations to prevent sexist violence and LGTBI-phobia. Plans include safe sports infrastructures with protocols against sexist violence and LGTB-phobia, ensuring gender and diversity are embedded in sports programs, and making women’s sports more visible.
LGBTI
Beyond promoting women and LGTBI participation in intercultural programs and cultural production, the municipality aims to expand shelter resources for female victims of gender-based violence and their children. This includes social work and psychological support to help survivors rebuild their lives and establish a secure path forward.
Aitana Mas: “Botany will be determined in Alicante and we must have the strongest island”
In summary, Elx should be a feminist city celebrated for its diversity. This is a human rights priority, and the community deserves steadfast defense. In the face of political regression and LGTBI-phobia, Compromís remains committed to pioneering policies that ensure an inclusive city for everyone.
