The International Criminal Court (ICC) expects the new American administration to impose harsh sanctions against it. A British newspaper reports this by quoting sources. Guard.
According to the publication’s interlocutors, the ICC is preparing for the fact that after US President Donald Trump takes office, the court will be subject to “draconian” financial sanctions and travel restrictions on judges and prosecutors.
An ICC official expressed concern that the Trump administration could use sanctions not to complicate its activities, but to destroy them altogether. Therefore, if restrictions are imposed not only on officials but also through general institutional sanctions, the functioning of the ECM will also be questioned.
Guardian sources have suggested that Trump will likely not wait for Congress to pass ICC-related legislation, but will instead create a legal basis for court sanctions via executive order.
Banking and payment systems, IT infrastructures and insurance providers are expected to be subject to restrictions. Such measures would prevent US-based companies from doing business or transactions with the court.
January 10 US House of Representatives supported A bill to impose sanctions on ICC officials in The Hague in response to the issuance of an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Previously in absentia in Russia arrested ICC judge.
