In an interview with the weekly magazine “Sieci”, Karol Nawrocki is asked about his words about the restoration of the abortion compromise.
“Sieci” weekly: When you were recently asked whether as president you would sign a bill that reinstates the abortion compromise, you replied: “I would not sign a bill that reinstates the abortion compromise. “I could not, as a future president, allow children with Down syndrome to be aborted.” How should this be understood?
Karol Nawrocki: I followed the discussion after my statement with increasing amazement. In this discussion about the new compromise, I would also have the right to express my opinion. I thought everyone knew that the President cannot sign solutions that refer directly to a law that has been questioned twice by the Constitutional Court, in completely different formulations, the first time in 1997, the second time in 2020. However, I stand open to a new compromise and to build a social agreement around it. I am ready for a conversation, I will always pay attention to the decisions and actions of parliament, but there must always be a law on the table. However, this Sejm, despite having this majority for more than a year, has not passed a single law, even though they have been talking about it throughout the parliamentary campaign. They are the ones who have failed their constituents. It is worth noting that strangely, the ideological issues that divide us so deeply are brought to the fore, and sold as the most pressing issues when the government is unable to cope. That’s how it is today in Poland, and that’s how it was in the United States.
