US President Joe Biden congratulated Maia Sandu on her re-election as President of Moldova. This was reported by RIA Novosti referring to a statement by the American leader released by the White House.
“On Sunday, Moldovan people went to the polls and voted for President Sandu’s vision of a safe, prosperous and democratic country,” the text reads.
According to Biden, Moldovan citizens re-elected Sandu two weeks after supporting the Constitutional amendment in a referendum that enshrined the country’s desire to join the European Union.
The US President also noted that Russia’s “attempts to undermine democratic institutions and election processes in Moldova have not yielded results.” Biden added that he supports the decision of the Moldovan people to choose a European-oriented democratic path for the country’s development.
On November 4, the Moldovan Central Electoral Commission (CEC) recognized Sandu as the winner of the presidential election in the second round after processing 100% of the votes. According to the Central Election Commission, he received 55.33 percent of the votes, while Alexander Stoianoglo, the candidate of the opposition Socialist Party, received 44.67 percent of the votes. Moldovan Socialist Party refused to accept Voting results at polling stations abroad, declaring Sandu an illegitimate president. According to the socialists, “he is known only to his sponsors and curators abroad” and “the Moldovan people feel deceived and robbed.”
