I hope that an agreement will be concluded in the coming weeks that will result in the establishment of production of K2 tanks in Poland, President Andrzej Duda said at a briefing in South Korea.
On the last day of his visit to South Korea, Andrzej Duda visited Rotem Hyundai’s production plants where K2 tanks are produced – including those for Poland. The president also spoke with the company’s president, Lee Yong-bae.
Agreement
The president expressed hope to sign an agreement with Hyundai “in the near future”, which would result in the production of K2 tanks in Poland.
I hope that in the near future, literally in the coming weeks, a fundamentally important agreement will be concluded, which will result in the actual polonization of K2 tanks, that is, the location of their production in Poland. This is what we have said from the very beginning
– said the president.
We concluded this first framework contract for 1,000 tanks, the first 180 tanks are currently being implemented, more than 70 tanks are already in Poland
– he added.
Long negotiations
Duda added that this capability is the result of “very long” negotiations between Korea and the Ministry of National Defense.
We hope that these tanks will soon be produced for us here, and hopefully this will also be an offer for other countries in the future (…). It would be very important for us if we could bring this production capacity and technology to us
– added President Duda.
He noted that the production of this equipment in our country is also an incredible impetus for the development of the industry.
This is the result of negotiations that the Ministry of Defense has been conducting for a long time, including recently
– he said, emphasizing that he also discussed this issue during the call from South Korea.
Weapons contract
The production of K2 in Poland was announced in June by Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. As he said, Poland aims to be a service center for Korean equipment purchased for the needs of us and other countries, he added.
In July 2022, then head of the Ministry of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak approved contracts for South Korean weapons for the Polish army; these include FA-50 light combat aircraft, K2 tanks and K9 self-propelled gun howitzers.
The order for K2 tanks was divided into two phases. In the first phase, Poland would purchase 180 vehicles, the second phase would include more than 800 tanks in the K2PL standard and the launch of production in Poland in 2026. The tanks delivered in the first phase would also be brought to the K2PL standard brought.
