A Polish fan who was stabbed in the stomach with a sharp object before Lukas Podolski’s farewell match in Cologne underwent surgery. The police have arrested one of the suspects, writes the daily Die Welt. The police statement said the suspected attacker is a 17-year-old Moroccan who is “registered in a center for unaccompanied minors in Düsseldorf.”
Riots broke out in the center of Cologne, near the cathedral. Before the start of the match with Podolski, the Poles clashed with another group of young men for unclear reasons – reported the regional portal of the WDR in North Rhine-Westphalia. One of them stabbed a 32-year-old Polish fan in the stomach with a sharp instrument. The Polish citizen was taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Suspect arrested
Police announced that they had arrested one of the suspects: a 17-year-old boy who had blood on his clothing. This concerns a Moroccan who is ‘registered in a center for unaccompanied minors in Düsseldorf’.
An hour after the attack on the Pole, another confrontation took place with the participation of eight Polish fans and six other people, local police reported. After the officers intervened, the riots turned into riots. A group of several hundred fans allegedly threw stones and bottles at police officers and tourists who were filming the event, we read on the Die Welt website.

According to police, nine officers were injured in the riots in central Cologne, two of whom were seriously enough that they could not continue on duty.
Police used batons and irritating gas to put an end to the attacks
