Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he will not agree to Ukraine’s membership in NATO as long as he is prime minister. According to him, “it would only be good as a starting point for World War III.” Fico said he has been presenting this position to Ukrainian politicians for a long time.
The head of government stated in a television interview that he is increasingly hearing about compromise solutions from Ukraine and Russia to end the war.
The word NATO is being played with. The result could be that Ukraine will be part of NATO, receiving some security guarantees and at the same time the Russian Federation will have influence in certain areas.
Fico said.
Speaking to a Slovak television journalist, he recalled that NATO membership must be ratified by all countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
As long as I am Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, I will direct the parliamentarians over whom I have political control as party chairman so that they will never agree to Ukraine’s membership in NATO.
– he assured.
Joint meeting of governments
Fico emphasized that he is not hiding his position from politicians from the United States or Ukraine. He announced that he would repeat them to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a joint meeting of the governments of Slovakia and Ukraine near Uzhhorod in Transcarpathia. Fico once again stated that he supports Ukraine’s membership of the EU.
International experts are increasingly concerned with a scenario in which Ukraine becomes a member of NATO according to the West German model of 1955. This means that only the part controlled by Kiev would actually be admitted to the Alliance. Such views were recently reported by the Financial Times, which wrote that Western diplomats and Ukrainian officials conclude that significant security guarantees could form the basis of the negotiated agreement. “FT” notes that the West German model for Ukraine has been discussed in foreign policy circles for more than 18 months.
