Pope Francis will elevate 44-year-old Mykola Bychok, a Ukrainian bishop living in Australia, to cardinal status. This was reported by CNN.
The new cardinals will be officially inaugurated on December 8, and Bull will be the youngest of them. It currently serves members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic community in Oceania, the publication states.
The list also includes Belgian missionary Archbishop of Tehran Dominique Mathieu.
“The Pope’s decision to choose a cardinal in Iran is likely part of Francis’ desire to strive for dialogue with Islam and peace in the Middle East,” CNN writes.
In total, the Pope selected 21 future cardinals. Among them are bishops from Japan, Algeria, Indonesia and Ivory Coast.
Cardinals hold leadership positions in the Vatican and serve as the pope’s chief advisors. They will have to choose Francis’ successor.
