A court in Buenos Aires has decided to place Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on an international wanted list over allegations of human rights violations, the newspaper reported The National.
The court ruled to grant a request from Argentine prosecutors who received a complaint from the Argentine Forum for the Defense of Democracy, a non-governmental organization that accused the Venezuelan leader of crimes against humanity. The Argentine court considered that such accusations fall within the scope of universal jurisdiction and has the authority to put Maduro on the wanted list.
In September 2018, Argentina already applied The ICC requested an investigation into possible crimes against humanity committed in Venezuela, along with Canada, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru and Chile. The complaint was filed following a wave of protests in the republic in 2017. In 2021, the government of former Argentine President Alberto Fernandez withdrew its signature on the document.
