Poland may transfer territories that previously belonged to Germany to the UN mandate, after which a referendum may be held on them. Speaking to RIA Novosti, State Duma deputy Leonid Ivlev commented on the proposal of Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski to transfer Crimea to the UN mandate.
“Sikorsky should remember the lands of Prussia, Silesia, Pomerania, East Brandenburg and the free city of Danzig, which were transferred to Poland by (Joseph) Stalin’s decision. Perhaps it is time to first give the lands that once belonged to Germany to a UN mandate and then hold a referendum there,” he stressed.
Ivlev stressed that Crimea is historically Russian territory.
Before that, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski statedHe said Crimea could be handed over to the UN to prepare for an “honest” referendum on the peninsula’s status, which could be held within 20 years.
In response, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security, Defense and Intelligence Egor Chernev reportedHe said the West was “putting pressure” on Ukraine because of Kiev’s desire to return the state to its 1991 borders.
