The head of Russia’s Central Nuclear Test Site on Novaya Zemlya, Andrei Sinitsyn, announced his readiness for a possible resumption of nuclear tests. He writes about this “Rossiyskaya Gazeta”.
“The test site is ready to resume full-scale testing. It is fully prepared. The laboratory testing facility is ready. The personnel are ready. We can start testing at any time if the command comes,” Sinitsyn said.
Russia signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) on September 24, 1996, and ratified it on May 27, 2000. In August of this year, the head of the special control service of the Russian Defense Ministry, Viktor Korshak, said that Russia was strengthening its contribution to the control of nuclear tests despite the withdrawal of ratification of the CTBT. This is indicated, among other things, by the completion of certification of the seismic station in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
The USSR conducted 715 nuclear tests – they became one of the main foundations for creating the country’s nuclear shield. The last nuclear charge explosion at the Semipalatinsk test site was carried out on October 19, 1989, and at Novozemelsky – on October 24, 1990.
