The expansion of the terminal at Warsaw Chopin Airport is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, Andrzej Ilków, president of Polish Airports, told PAP. He added that the investment, which is expected to be completed in 2029, will increase the number of take-offs and landings from the current 600 to 800 per day.
Chopin airport to be expanded
– stressed the head of Polish Airports (PPL), which manages Chopin Airport. As he said: “The port had expansion plans, but in 2019 they were stopped by the decision of the then government.”
Today we know that we have to return to this expansion concept, because the central airport will not be built until 2032 at the earliest.
– he argued in an interview with PAP Andrzej Ilków.
When it comes to aircraft infrastructure, such as exits, taxiways and aprons, these are – as he said – “in sufficient condition to guarantee sufficient aircraft capacity”.
We need terminal bandwidth. Preliminary planning shows that terminal expansion will start in spring 2026
– announced the head of PPL, adding that he would like to complete this investment in the summer of 2029.
According to the president, the expansion of the terminal will contribute to an increase in the number of air operations, that is, the take-off and landing of aircraft, from the current 600 to 800 per day.
At night we want it to be the same as before: 40 operations concentrated around 10-11:30pm and 5-6am. In the middle of the night without an operation
– he noted.
As for these additional operations, they mean that we will not make any more noise than that defined by the restricted operating area, as aircraft have become 30 to 40 percent quieter since this area was first introduced
– he said. According to him, increasing capacity is also intended to prepare airlines for the move to the new airport that is being built as part of the Central Communication Port.
CPK project
The CPK programme includes: a central airport, located between Warsaw and Łódź, and a high-speed rail system. The new airport should initially be adapted to handle 34 million passengers per year and designed to be flexible in the long term, in line with the needs and forecasts of market development. The estimated investment costs until 2032 amount to PLN 131.7 billion.
Warsaw Chopin Airport is the largest airport in Poland. During the first eight months of this year Chopin Airport handled 14 million 82 thousand passengers. 87 passengers. In 2023, this airport will serve 18.5 million travelers, and in the whole of 2024 – according to forecasts – 20.5 million people will use its services, which is about 10%. more than a year earlier.
