An article by Prof. appeared in “Gazeta Wyborcza”. Wojciech Sadurski, who calls for even tougher and more decisive action against the political opponents of the ruling coalition. He believed that the actions of Donald Tusk’s team so far, which were intended to “restore democracy”, had stalled and were generally too delicate. He therefore calls for decisive action.
Sadurski begins his argument in a typical manner: by drawing a dividing line between the “authoritarian” PiS government and the Civic Coalition and its supporters, who are reportedly trying to restore democracy and the rule of law.
““Heavy” transition period
The transition period between one government and another should be short, but – according to Prof. Sadurski – it is becoming longer, which in his opinion has a disastrous impact on Poland, because the short-lived system of the previous government would have to be recreated.
A few months ago, I warned on these pages that Poland was heading into a tiring period of “Sisyphean democracy,” in which the new democratic authorities would continually fall into the trap cunningly set by the old regime.

He notes that the “traps” of the predecessors are of various nature: from institutional, related to the Constitutional Tribunal or TS, to personal to procedural, focused on the problem of the inability to quickly replace personnel in strategic areas of the state.
Sadurski judged that PiS, wanting to guarantee itself a favorable position in case of losing the parliamentary elections (which rather contradicts his thesis on the party’s authoritarianism), filled the most important state positions with its own nominees, and described all this as “statutory lawlessness”. I wonder if he has the same approach to PO’s staff moves in 2015, when the winds of change blowing through Polish politics were clearly felt.
Of course, he complains about the situation of the Constitutional Court, because as long as it made rulings in line with PO expectations, it was good – and part of upholding the rule of law, thus thwarting PiS projects. However, when opinions were balanced, due to staff changes at the Constitutional Tribunal, Sadurski considered this institution “part of the problem” that “needed to be addressed differently”.
Shocking revelations about public media
What is even more shocking is that Prof. Wojciech Sadurski described the illegal and violent takeover of public media as a “masterpiece” that should be repeated in other parts of the country.
Unfortunately, such masterpieces do not always succeed, as in the case of TVP or former national prosecutor Dariusz Barski, when ministers Sienkiewicz and Bodnar effectively abused the incompetence of the president or the former minister of justice. You cannot count on such gifts of fate in the long run, although such clumsiness of the old system should be used against it.

The scientist even came to the conclusion that “legality is killing Poland”, and that the “rule of law is perceived in a clichéd way” is certainly that too. According to him, under the conditions of abandoning the alleged authoritarianism of PiS, we must abandon legal solutions, because the transitional situation requires it. Apparently, in this logic, it is also a justification for all the misconduct and violation of the law, if the self-proclaimed “democratic camp” can break all the rules to replace the previous political round with its own nominees. For such paralysis of the state, Prof. Sadurski does not give permission.
In order to briefly justify his thoughts, he points to a number of – in his opinion – vivid examples that illustrate the current state of the country. Therefore, he is concerned about the issue of the Law on the National Council of the Judiciary, the division in the Supreme Court into “his” and “non-his” judges, and the Constitutional Tribunal, which he calls the “Tribunal of MA Przyłębska” and, of course, President Andrzej Duda, who does not want to sign all these scandalous actions of the new government with his signature.
The president is at the center of the accusations
This is what the head of state is criticized for in Prof. Sadurski’s article.
There is no charm of Machiavellian politics in the President’s actions; on the contrary, it is the coarseness of a sulking autocrat, jealous of the power of the current politicians, their talents and knowledge, determined to defend the interests and privileges of the old system. And often even sadism, arising from narcissism and lack of emotional intelligence, as in the case of sending to the Tribunal a bill intended to provide assistance to female fugitives from Ukraine attacked by Putin, and it was adopted – horror! – in the absence of the two criminals mentioned in the Sejm, tenderly embraced by the President.

Prof. Wojciech Sadurski despairs in Adam Michnik’s newspaper that nothing can be done about the ‘presidential problem’ until August 2025. However, he already sees a suitable solution for this transition period. Namely, he proposes – following the French example in the case of Marine Le Pen – to create a kind of cordon sanitaire around the President of the Republic of Poland, who will gradually ignore him and wait for the end of his term of office.
However, if anyone thought that President Duda would not be investigated and attacked, they are seriously mistaken. Sadurski, in developing the concept of his cordon sanitaire, would like to investigate – as he himself puts it – the alleged “Byzantine presidential bureaucracy.”
Riding with a gang
Outside the presidential center, the scientist proposes brutal, gang-like actions.
The remaining links in the closed PiS system can and should be dissolved. This applies in particular to the tribunal of Mgr. Przyłębska and the neo-KRS. Attempts to neutralize these deposits with gloves have not yet yielded any results

Prof. Sadurski complains that previous attempts to influence the Constitutional Tribunal or the National Council of the Judiciary, which were carried out illegally through parliamentary resolutions, remained only an “unfulfilled wish”. Therefore, he proposes to exclude both bodies from the so-called legal circulation, which in his opinion is only an organizational problem, not a systemic one.
Therefore, he proposes nothing less than what happened during the illegal takeover of public media by Donald Tusk’s coalition.
Usurpers should lose access to offices, official emails and excessive rewards. The latter in particular, I predict, will work wonders
– he emphasized.
Demand of political prisoners
The benchmark for the former government’s liability, according to Sadurski, is the case of MP Marcin Romanowski, which was supposed to expose the disease of the legal system. It seems that a renowned jurist, Prof. Sadurski, would arrest a MP, who is entitled to immunity, without any frills or embellishments. A truly remarkable understanding of democracy and the rule of law.
He makes another bizarre assessment of Adam Bodnar, stating that he “achieved a lot” and that he should be given justice. However, among these “merits” of Bodnar were the most controversial and scandalous actions of people from his ministry, who in Poland were called “Bodnarists”.
However, this is not enough. Acceleration is needed. Sisyphus should play the role of Hercules, because PiS’s Augean stable continues to poison public life. The anti-system PiS and SP parties, after years of unpunished theft and lies, even if they are not banned, should not be able to use democracy against themselves so easily.
