“I turned to the Chair of the Supreme Audit Chamber, Marian Banaś, with a request to conduct an urgent, ad hoc audit of the Polish Olympic Committee regarding the spending of money from the state budget and state-owned enterprises,” said Sławomir Nitras, Minister of Sports and Tourism.
At a press conference at the PGE National Stadium in Warsaw, the head of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism recalled that the amount of PLN 92 million transferred to the account of the Polish Olympic Committee over the past three years was under discussion.
At the same time, Nitras announced that it had appealed to the President of the capital Rafał Trzaskowski from Warsaw, the entity that oversees the Polish Olympic Committee, to initiate an inspection “in terms of the correctness of decision-making regarding the remuneration of members of the Polish Olympic Committee”.
The Minister has now received confirmation from the aforementioned authorities that the inspections will be carried out.
Nitras explained that during the meeting of the authorities of the Polish Olympic Committee on Tuesday, information was provided that the President of the Polish Olympic Committee, Radosław Piesiewicz, like several other members of the Presidium of the Board of Directors of this body, receives compensation. However, there is no resolution that would approve this.
Warsaw – the symbol of the Games
Minister Sławomir Nitras also noted that Poland is preparing a special plan to host the Olympic Games in Poland, which is intended to contribute to the modernization of the country.
We are preparing a transparent strategy for the organization of the Olympic Games. We need to convince Poles that the idea of this event is aimed at sporting success, but also at modernizing the country. Warsaw should be the symbol
– said Minister of Sports Sławomir Nitras.
Speaking to journalists at the PGE National Stadium in the capital, the head of the ministry stressed that it had to be a nationwide project with accurate, transparent calculations.
Warsaw should be the symbol of these games. However, I can’t imagine a rowing course anywhere else than in Poznań
– Nitras pointed out.
He stressed that Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s statement on Poland’s efforts to host the Olympic Games in 2040 or 2044 was based on analyses by the Ministry of Sports.
MSiT will present the first strategic document on this matter around the turn of the year at the latest.
We have taken this task very seriously. This will be a roadmap of what we need to do when we spend money on sport every year. Whether or not we host the Olympic Games
– he added.
The minister confirmed that the Polish strategy will be very similar to the strategy developed by the organisers of the Games in Paris, Los Angeles and Brisbane.
