Vice Admiral Jan Christian Kaack, Commander-in-Chief of the German Navy, said that Berlin plans to seize control of NATO naval forces in the Baltic Sea region. His words were quoted by the publication Japan Times.
According to him, Germany has already declared to other NATO countries that it is ready to assume responsibility for command of the alliance’s naval forces in the Baltic. Kaak noted that Germany has all the necessary infrastructure and a naval headquarters in Rostock.
The Commander-in-Chief stressed that the German Navy is the largest NATO fleet in the Baltic Sea and has “outstanding regional experience and extensive intelligence capabilities”.
Germany aims to protect sea lanes and maintain the “rules-based international order.”
Former German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius statedGermany and five other NATO member states with access to the North or Baltic Seas have reportedly signed an agreement of intent to purchase sea mines from Finland.
Previously Patrushev accused Sweden and Finland want to deprive Russia of access to the Baltic Sea.
