Perhydrol is being added to the Dzierżno Duże reservoir to prevent golden algae blooms; this is to protect the Oder River from the disaster that occurred in 2022, says Paulina Hennig-Kloska, Minister of Climate and Environment.
The situation in the Dzierżno reservoir remains difficult, although it seems to be stabilizing. We must not forget that we are dealing with unfavorable meteorological and hydrological conditions. All this makes the situation dynamic: it changes from day to day
– said the head of the Ministry of Environment at a conference held near the operation carried out by the services.
““What we have been doing here for days is limiting the disaster.”
According to Hennig-Kloska, the so-called golden algae, perhydrol (hydrogen peroxide) is administered, which in appropriate doses limits the bloom of toxic organisms.
What we have been doing here for many days is to limit the disaster that is taking place in the Dzierżno reservoir so that it does not occupy the Gliwice Canal and especially the Oder (golden algae – PAP), so that we do not have a repeat of 2022. If I had it in this regard, assess the situation, we have it relatively under control. The situation with golden algae does not extend to other areas than Dzierżno
– assured the minister.
Kloska noted that the effective fight against golden algae is the result of an experiment conducted by the Institute of Environmental Protection and scientists working on site. As the Minister of the Environment added, the use of the new method allows to reduce golden algae by 95%, and at night even by 99%.
Hennig-Kloska added that the Ministry of Environmental Protection is working on a way to reduce the amount of pollutants entering reservoirs such as Dzierżno and the Oder itself, mainly brine discharged into water from mines.
An interministerial team is working on this. I believe that the investment plan will be presented by the end of this year, so that we can tackle the causes of the problem, and not just the consequences
– she concluded.
