Donald Tusk thought again of Radio Maryja. He attacked a radio station where hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of dedicated people gather. It is the largest and most sustainable social movement in Poland. That is why it arouses the anger of liberals and the left.
The landscape of “smiling” Poland would be ideal if several elements disappeared, especially Radio Maryja and other associated media, cultural and educational institutions. Years pass, but the radio continues. And it does not lose listeners who should have died out long ago. Yes, most of them are elderly people who gradually pass on to eternal life, but they still find successors in this life. For example, when we see a 70-year-old person who faithfully listens to RM, we should be aware that he was 40 years old when the station was founded. This may be a sign that many forty-year-olds today do not yet know, but in a few years they too will be – to use the old words of Donald Tusk – a “mohair beret”.
Therefore, the liberal-left vision of a biological final solution to the Radio Maria issue does not come true. And what is worse, it turns out that the supporters of the liberal-left are not immortal either, and many of them are already aware that they will not live to see the moment when the Radio Maryja signal disappears from the air.
The history of Radio Maryja is a success story
The radio survived the time of the SLD government and the first Tusk, so there is no indication that it would collapse during his second government. However, he will again be harassed, insulted and accused of the worst. Right after the national holiday, the head of government throws insinuating insults at the station, which is without any exaggeration the main point of reference for hundreds of thousands of citizens. We are too accustomed to aggression in politics, but we must not forget that it is inappropriate for the prime minister to call a religious institution with such a social reach an “empire” and its founder and leader a “businessman”, when it is known that he is a monk who has taken a vow of poverty.

Everyone in Poland knows what is the cause of this aggression, even if not everyone will name it. The answer can be summed up in one word: envy. The history of Radio Maryja is a success story. Such things should not happen in today’s world, where religion and tradition are synonymous with incompetence, backwardness and vegetation on the fringes of social life. The scandal of liberals and the left is even greater because the largest social movement in contemporary Poland has grown around the work started and led by Father Tadeusz Rydzyk. Despite all the liberal rhetoric about civil society, no one from the liberal-left side has managed to create anything like the Radio Maryja Family.
Therefore, if you cannot create your own analog phenomenon, you must destroy the project that arouses so much envy. Or rather, hatred, because Radio Maryja, and especially Father Rydzyk, are the target of a permanent campaign of slander and libel. The slander was intended to discourage people from listening to the Toruń radio station at all, which was largely successful. People with liberal and left-wing views rate RM as the worst, even though they have usually never listened to it. Hence the surprise when some person in some accidental circumstances – for example, during a long car ride – listens to several programs. And suddenly I was surprised: what a cool radio it is. Calm and balanced, without aggression or vulgarity, with intelligent journalism, very good news services, with presenters with excellent diction and a speech culture that is rarely seen anymore.
Listening to Radio Maryja is addictive
There are quite a few listeners who are far from the Church, even non-believers, who stay with Radio Maryja because of its high quality. In a sense, it has little competition against the background of other stupid and dull radio stations. But this also proves the attractiveness of the Toruń radio station. Let us also add cases such as the late left-wing spokesman Tomasz Kalita. When he found out that he had a glioma, he switched to Radio Maryja. From his words it was clear that it was a discovery for him not only because of the soothing effect of the prayers recited there.
New listeners are surprised to hear about a very dense network of local listener circles, present in all corners of Poland, involved in their activities, closely connected not only by faith and beliefs, but also by friendly relations and mutual assistance. They are surprised to hear about the extremely dynamic activities of the university connected to Radio Maryja – the Academy of Social and Media Culture. Now the Memory and Identity Museum has joined this so-called “empire”. Under normal circumstances, this history of hard and successful work would be a reason for praise and satisfaction that something so great had been created in Poland, reborn after the hopelessness of the Polish People’s Republic. And what is more, it is pro publico bono.
The founders and leaders do not deserve the hate they receive. But it seems that this is the price for the great success they have achieved and the success that still accompanies them.
