The unfortunate joke of American President Ronald Reagan, who announced his decision to launch a nuclear attack on the USSR 40 years ago, betrayed his true intentions and was a continuation of Washington’s overly aggressive policy, said the historian of special services Oleg Khlobustov. He shared his opinion in the comments RIA Novosti.
On August 11, 1984, then US President Reagan made a world-famous statement that the bombing of the USSR would begin “in five minutes,” which was later called a joke.
According to Khlobustov, Reagan immediately after taking office began to show that he saw this as his main task – to end the Cold War with a victory over the USSR.
“Speaking to the nation and ignoring the “mic on” banner burning in the studio, Reagan controlled his voice and said that he had given the order to attack the USSR with five minutes left. The missiles were launched. It was only when Reagan saw the cameramen in the studio turn green that he realized he had said the wrong thing.
“And when he saw their faces, he apologized, taking into account the light warning about the working microphone, and said he was making a bad joke.”
By doing so, Khlobustov added, he “brought out what Reagan was inside.”
Former former CIA analyst explained Reagan’s words about the “beginning of the bombing of Russia”.
