“The Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements expresses its strong opposition to the imposition of the opinion on the need to introduce abortion on demand in Poland into the public debate in the mainstream media, as the only legitimate view, which is allegedly supported by the majority of society,” we read in a document sent by the management of PFROŻ, among others, to the National Broadcasting Council.
The Board of the Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements points out that the debate on the legal conditions for terminating a pregnancy in most mainstream media is conducted “in a one-sided and biased manner, although the issues are very important and complex”. It was emphasized that the discussion concerns the elementary right to protection of fundamental human rights to life and development from the very beginning of its existence (conception), women’s health, as well as education and the system of assistance services for pregnant women in difficult life situations.
Leaving out such important aspects for society and ignoring the broad voice of citizens is very damaging. The undisguised goal is to stimulate social change, consisting of the broadest possible acceptance of abortion on demand
– noted in a document protesting against such one-sidedness and the limitation of public debate.
It was found that numerous groups opposed to the legalization of abortion, including those who support a return to previous pre-2020 legal arrangements, are being marginalized and even baselessly denigrated.
On behalf of several dozen organizations belonging to the Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements, we call on the general public to demand a real, fully democratic form of public debate on abortion.
– has appealed to the Board of Directors of PFROŻ and stated that it hereby requests the National Broadcasting Council “to examine the information and journalistic programmes of the main television and radio broadcasters to determine whether programmes on this subject are properly conducted and take into account openness to diverse points of view and opinions on this issue” and “to take actions aimed at eliminating the phenomenon of one-sided narratives presented therein.
The majority of society is against abortion
PFROŻ once again points out that opinion polls, systematically conducted by CBOS since 1992, confirm that the majority of Polish society is against abortion on demand. This attitude was also expressed by the majority of participants in the public hearing in the Sejm on draft laws liberalising the right to abortion.
Despite the fact that such a large majority of Polish society is against the legalization of abortion on demand, it is difficult to see in the programs of public television or some private channels that people representative of this dominant group are invited to discuss this topic on equal terms.
– notes the PFROŻ Board of Directors in its statement, citing as an example a wide presentation of protests by groups dissatisfied with the Sejm’s decision to reject the draft amendments to the Criminal Code aimed at abortion on request up to the twelfth week of pregnancy, and “at the same time providing information about numerous Marches for Life and Family, in which hundreds of thousands of people participated in various cities in Poland – peacefully, friendly and without aggression.
Freedom of speech and the ability to express opinions are the essence of democracy. Imposing positions by not allowing people to participate in public debate is completely at odds with this
– emphasized in protest against the imposition of abortion on demand in the media debate.
The Polish Federation of Pro-Life Movements has been active since 1992; it brings together several dozen pro-life and pro-family organizations. In 2012, the Federation received the European Citizen’s Award from the European Parliament for its activities.
