President Andrzej Duda, as every year, took part in the concert “Warsaw residents sing (un)forbidden songs” on Piłsudski Square in Warsaw. “This 80th anniversary probably brought together even more people who want to commemorate the Warsaw Uprising and pay tribute to the insurgents, those who remember and for whom it is important, who understand what we have been saying in recent days (…) that the Uprising is a moral basis for our independence,” President Duda said in an interview with TVP journalist Żaklina Skowrońska.
In a conversation with Żaklina Skowrońska, the President noted that people from all over Poland were at the concert of rebellious songs in Warsaw.
Thank you very much to everyone who came and was in different places in Warsaw yesterday and today, in squares, cemeteries, under monuments, at places of executions, battles, wherever it is important to be, to pay tribute, to perpetuate the memory, thank you very much for that
– he said Andrzej Duda.
The journalist from wPolsce.pl also asked the head of state about the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on this special day when Poles commemorate the Warsaw Uprising. President of Germany, among others, laid flowers at the Wola Massacre Victims Memorial Site. He also publicly admitted that Germany was responsible for crimes during World War II.
These are extremely important gestures, symbolic, which show the will for reconciliation and good neighbourliness. The fact that the Federal Republic of Germany, through the voices of the people of the most important politicians like Frank-Walter Steinmeier, expressis verbis says: “Yes, we are responsible for these crimes, we ask for forgiveness”, is of great importance. as is the courage to stand here before us, especially before the insurgents in Warsaw. This, regardless of the question of compensation, also has great moral significance
– said President Duda.
