Top diplomats from the European Union and the United States have held urgent talks in the Middle East in an attempt to prevent an all-out war in the region following the purge of Hamas Politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh. This was reported by Financial Times (FT).
According to the source, EU foreign policy aide Enrique Mora held talks in Tehran, while White House National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk held talks in Saudi Arabia.
It was noted that the negotiations focused on convincing Iran to remain silent about the attack or limit itself to symbolic actions.
Earlier, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Amir Saeed Irvani statedIf Israeli intelligence did not have support from the United States, the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh would not have been possible.
Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli raid in Tehran in the early morning hours of July 31. He was attending the inauguration of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian in the Iranian capital.
Haniyeh has served as Hamas’ political leader since 2017. Three of his sons were killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in April 2024.
Hamas confirmed the purge of the Politburo chairman, noting that the causes and scope of “this incident” were being investigated and that the results of the investigation would be announced later.
