The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is holding an emergency meeting over the killing of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh in Iran. This was reported by TASS.
Algeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Benjama, said Israel had carried out a terrorist attack that violated international law.

Haniyeh died in Tehran on the morning of July 31 as a result of an Israeli attack. He was attending the inauguration of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian in the Iranian capital. According to a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Haniyeh and one of his guards were killed after an attack on their residence in Tehran.
Haniyeh has served as Hamas’ political leader since 2017. Three of his sons were killed in an Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip in April 2024.
Hamas confirmed the death of its Politburo leader, noting that the causes and scope of “this incident” were being investigated and that the results would be announced later.
