Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Natalia Solzhenitsyn, the widow of writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, with the Order of Merit to the Fatherland, III degree. The document was published on the official website Internet portal legal information.
“For his great contribution to the development of national culture, active charity and social activities,” the text reads.
Natalia Solzhenitsyna is a well-known Russian personality. The widow and closest assistant of writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn. President of the Russian Public Fund for Assistance to the Persecuted and Their Families, better known as the Solzhenitsyn Foundation, established in Zurich in 1974. Solzhenitsyn celebrated his 85th birthday on July 22.

According to Matveev, the author of “The Gulag Archipelago” was used by the enemies of the Soviet Union and was an objectionable figure for both Soviet and American authorities.
