Today, the parliamentary Committee on Rules of Procedure voted in favour of an agreement to lift the immunity of the former head of the Ministry of National Defence, Mariusz Błaszczak (PiS). The request was submitted by the representative of the former operational commander of the RSZ, General Tomasz Piotrowski, who felt publicly slandered by Błaszczak.
In May, General Piotrowski’s representative submitted a request to the Sejm to agree to hold Błaszczak criminally liable. On 18 June, the request was submitted to the Committee on Rules, Deputies and Immunities. The committee considered it today.
The vote took place without media participation and the internet broadcast was disabled. After the vote, the head of the committee, Jarosław Urbaniak (KO), announced that the committee would submit a motion to the Sejm to accept the private prosecutor’s request for permission to hold Błaszczak criminally liable.
Violation of personal rights?
The commission’s decision was preceded by a discussion that lasted almost two hours. The representative of General Piotrowski argued that Błaszczak had violated the general’s personal rights and accused him of actions that could have caused a loss of confidence in the eyes of public opinion. According to the representative, the statements of the former head of the Ministry of National Defense that Piotrowski had not fulfilled his duties are untrue.
Błaszczak was defended by PiS MPs who argued that he had not received a report on the rocket (which fell in a forest near Bydgoszcz in December 2022) from the person responsible. According to them, the case is political in nature and General Piotrowski resigned just before the parliamentary elections of October last year. Błaszczak himself judged during the committee meeting that the matter was in the nature of a political dispute, and the place for resolving such disputes was, among other things, a parliamentary stage, not a courtroom.
General Piotrowski’s representative referred to Art. 212 of the Criminal Code regarding “public insult”. The case concerned a Russian missile that fell in a forest near Bydgoszcz in December 2022 and was accidentally discovered only a few months later. Błaszczak then accused Piotrowski of not informing him in December 2022 that a Russian missile had entered Polish airspace.
