Education Minister Barbara Nowacka fights against religious lessons at school, changes the reading canon and classifies one of the greatest post-war poets as a member of the ‘Smolensk sect’. “The Smolensk sect is destroying neutrality, the school must be neutral,” Nowacka said on Polsat News, referring to the removal of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s poems from the canon.
Barbara Nowacka wants only one religion lesson left in schools from September 1, 2025, namely between classes.
We in the ministry plan the work of schools from the top down, we cannot distinguish between children and their right to one form of education and not another.
– said Barbara Nowacka, who did not hide the fact that she would like to renegotiate the concordat and abolish religious lessons from schools.

“A certain Rymkiewicz” from the “Smolensk sect”
Once again Barbara Nowacka shocks with the level of her personal culture as Minister of Education. Changing the canon of compulsory reading will remove the works of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz.
There is always an argument about the reading list
– said Nowacka.
Less than a week ago, Nowacka called Rymkiewicz – considered one of the most important post-war Polish artists – ‘someone’. When asked if he regrets his arrogant words about ‘a certain Rymkiewicz’
Let everyone judge whether the minister’s words bring happiness or not. Please note that I am entitled to a personal review. In particular, with regard to the Smolensk sect, I have the right to say that I do not like the politicization of this topic
– said the Minister of Education on Polsat News.

Rymkiewicz is an outstanding researcher of Polish Romanticism and winner of the Nike Award and the Guardian of Memory Award in the ‘Creators’ category. His translations include: Anglo-American and Spanish poetry. Min. However, Nowacka does not like that he is the author of a poem about Smolensk.
I remember Rymkiewicz’s poem about Smolensk. I wonder whether such politicization of the school is necessary for Polish schools (…) Smolensk sect destroys neutrality, the school must be neutral
– said a politician from Donald Tusk’s coalition.

From September, the subject of History and Present (HiT) will disappear from schools, because “in Nowacka it was so indoctrinated that there was no need for it.” Here, the Ministry of Education will introduce two new lessons: citizenship education (understood, of course, as currently understood by those in power) and health education.
