President Andrzej Duda spoke by telephone with the President of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, on Friday about a Pole who had been sentenced to life imprisonment. A Polish traveler, Mariusz Majewski, was arrested by the services of the Democratic Republic of Congo on charges including: sabotage and accused of espionage. There are many indications that the Pole will be released.
In an interview on RMF FM, the presidential minister was asked whether President Duda would become involved in the case of a Pole convicted in Congo.
On Friday, a telephone conversation took place between the President of the Republic of Poland and the President of Congo on this issue. It is the duty of the Polish state to take care of the lives and health of Polish citizens who find themselves in such a dramatic situation
– emphasized Minister Wojciech Kolarski. He also assured that there is cooperation between the Presidential Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this matter. “that the Pole should be released immediately”.

The Pole can be released
Interia reported that the Pole appeared before a military tribunal in Congo on March 23 and was charged with sabotage and destruction of installations of the Congolese armed forces. According to researchers, Mariusz Majewski had:
Approach the front line with militia members from Mobondo groups; move along the front line without permission from the competent authorities and without the company of qualified officers; taking photos of sensitive and strategic places; secretly observe military activities.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Paweł Wroński said on Friday that a Polish national residing in Congo had been accused of espionage.
Mr. Mariusz Majewski is not a spy, he is a man who belongs to the travelers club. We hope that this very harsh and drastic punishment will be changed in subsequent cases
– said Wroński, recalling that there was a civil war going on in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Pole has a chance to be released.
This decision must be made by the Attorney General; this decision has already been taken, but it must be accepted by the Prime Minister of this country
– noted the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
